Acts 4:31
After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Acts talks about the history of the early church after the ascension of Christ. Acts 3 tells us that Peter and John were staying in Jerusalem. One day they went into the temple courts and passed by a crippled man who asked them for money. This crippled man was well-known by everyone in town and was carried everyday to gate of the temple so he could beg for money. Peter told him there was no money, but instead called on the Lord to heal the man. He stood up and walked. Everyone was amazed because he had been unable to walk for a long time and in the next chapter we find out he was over 40 years old – healing an older person was even more miraculous.
Peter and John gave all the glory to God in the name of Christ Jesus. In Acts 4, the Apostles were approached by priests, the captain of the temple guard, Sadducees, rulers, elders, teachers of the law, and men of the high priest’s family. Basically, they got everybody’s attention when the healed the old dude. The big question was, “By what power did you do this healing?” Peter told them (without hesitation or mixing words) through the power of Jesus, who by the way is the Lord God and the only way to be saved.
This was not really the answer the religious leaders were looking for. They wanted to hear, “The Lord God most high, the God of Abraham and David” (minus the Jesus part). Or they wanted to hear “Baal”, meaning in the name a demon idol. There was confusion about Jesus and what his life and followers meant to the belief system in Israel at that time. So, the leaders gave Peter and John some threats, then some more threats, and finally released them with the stern warning to not talk about Jesus.
So what did the Apostles do? They went right back to the early church members and spoke even more boldly about the gospel of Jesus. They were filled with boldness the scripture says. And finally, they prayed with the people and Acts 4:31 was the result.
“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”
I’m ready to be shaken. I want to be bold. The gospel of Christ is not for me to keep inside, but rather speak boldly.
